Can't blame Madrid for being worried about democratic choice when it looks at here and the US. The electorate of these two countries are responsible for Trump, Brexit and the fucking torys.

It's 'torys'. No caps and least letters. They're not worth the effort

So, back to Catalan...

Are they declaring independence or just further provoking Madrid and muddying the waters?

I wonder which country would be the first to recognise Catalonia as an independent sovereign state, my guess would be Russia.

What happened in the end then? Some empty threats of declaring independence?

I reckon the threat of a naval blockade, the army taking to the streets may have persuaded the Catalans not to risk going over the edge, stepped back perhaps temporarily in the hope that Madrid might at least talk to them.
There are now two leaders imprisoned for their action on the referendum, whether that will bring people back onto the streets to demonstrate against Madrid we will have to wait and see.
